It is a minimalist and low-budget product, so you shouldn’t expect too much. Especially since it is still in development, not everything works very well, such as the connection to companion apps. If you care about privacy, this watch does not require a proprietary app or account to function.
Sometimes there are issues when it discharges. One time I thought it was broken, as it didn’t want to boot, but then updating the firmware fixed the problem:
I wanted to connect the unsealed version with cables to the Raspberry Pi and run my own application on it. I have already found a tutorial on how to write a sample application for it. Following this article wiki.pine64.org/wiki/PineTime_Devkit_Wiring and this docs.infinitime.io/en/latest/developer-documentation/index.html#creating-your-own-app
My goal is to first display my own graphic on the screen, and then create a super simple example application with text and two buttons. In the end, I aim to develop a to-do list app with multiple interactions. But I’m not sure if I really want to dive deeper into embedded device development or concentrate on other projects, as this requires a lot of time.
Anyway, I once analyzed the interaction design and usage context. Here are my notes. My analysis is from 2021. Since then, some new features have been released.
